Project 01 · Pool enclosure

Turning a pitch-black pool area into a finished outdoor room

The pool was usable during the day but disappeared at night. Sloan installed thirteen up-and-down sconces around the screened enclosure, using warm light to define the structure without washing the entire space in harsh overhead brightness.

The challengeA large enclosed pool area with little usable light after sunset.
The lighting moveRepeated wall-mounted sconces created rhythm and even architectural definition.
The visual resultWarm pools of light made the enclosure feel intentional from end to end.
The practical resultThe pool and surrounding deck became easier to use and enjoy at night.

Project 02 · Full-property color

A Florida Gators house built out of light

This design was not limited to a row of colored bulbs. Orange and blue were carried across the roofline, facade, planting beds, and feature trees so the entire property read as one coordinated scene from the street.

The challengeCreate a bold team-color display without letting the different elements compete.
The lighting moveSeparate architectural and landscape layers were balanced within one color direction.
The focal pointsThe roofline established the outline while the trees added scale and drama.
The flexibilityColor-changing systems can shift for game days, holidays, events, and everyday white light.
Project 03 · Commercial permanent lighting

Sutherlin Nissan, visible after dark

The dealership had limited nighttime presence from the highway. Sloan installed permanent lighting across the building's upper architectural line, giving the property a clear nighttime outline and an app-controlled system that can change for everyday use, holidays, and special events.

Commercial-scale rooflineThe lighting follows the dealership facade across a long, highly visible elevation.
App-controlled scenesColors, patterns, and effects can be changed without reinstalling temporary lighting.
Nighttime visibilityThe roofline gives the building a stronger visual edge from surrounding roads.
Year-round flexibilityThe same installed system can support everyday white and event-specific color.

Project 04 · Live oak lighting

Making the oak canopy part of the home's architecture

The mature live oaks were the natural focal point. Sloan lit the trunks and branching structure from below, framed the entrance, and mounted fixtures higher in the canopy to cast soft moonlight and organic shadows across the lawn.

Uplighting from belowFocused light reveals the size, texture, and branching structure of the live oaks.
Moonlighting from aboveCanopy-mounted fixtures filter light through the branches and onto the lawn.
Entry framingArchitectural light guides the eye through the trees toward the front door.
Depth, not flat brightnessDifferent fixture heights create foreground, midground, and background layers.
How the work gets there

The finished photo starts with decisions made on the property

Good outdoor lighting is not a fixture count. It is a sequence of choices about what deserves attention, what should stay quiet, and how the entire property should feel after dark.

Sloan studies the architecture, landscape, sightlines, outdoor rooms, and how the space is used.

02

See Real Light

03

Build the Design

Fixture types, placement, zones, controls, and wiring are planned as one coordinated system.

Tune It After Dark

Angles, brightness, and balance are adjusted at night, when the lighting can be evaluated properly.
